Cerveza Tasting
Azteca Brewery is part of the revolution in craft beers. When Jim Valles, their sales manager, brought these beers to my attention, we had the idea to match them with my recipes. Instead I conducted a beer tasting session with my friends. On New Year’s Day we tasted three Aztec Brewery beers. Admittedly, not scientifically. Most of the tasters had hangovers from the night before and the rest were working towards one given the Bloody Marys and Mimosas being consumed at our brunch. Check out our results, and then go purchase Azteca and be your own judge. These brands can currently be found and Total wine, Whole Foods and Sprouts. Aztec Brewery’s webpage.
Madness to my Method
About my data – As in the movie Zoot Suit, the Pachuco says, “Don’t take it so seriously vato”. So here we go.
We tasted three of beers. Chipotle IPA, Hibiscus Wheat, and Aztec Sacrifice; I asked our 6 tasters to match each beer to the following food categories.
- Grilled BBQ Meats
- Pizza
- Mexican Grilled & Oven Meats
- Mexican Food in Sauces
The results of votes are tabulated in tables below. The number in each box is the number of tasters that matched a beer to the food item. I only show votes greater than 3 as way to cluster the data. While many items received votes I don’t assign weight for votes of 2 or less.
Chipotle IPA
Gut reactions: Balanced Malty, Bitter, Pils, Spicy, Flavorful, Bright, Has Bite
Hibiscus (Jamaica) Wheat Beer
Gut reactions: Fruity, Light, Refreshing, Bright
Aztec Sacrifice
Gut reactions: Malty, Foamy
Summary:
All six tasters really liked the Hibiscus Wheat Beer and all were positively surprised with this beer, even some who said they don’t like wheat beers. The Hibiscus (Jamaica) Wheat Beer is the unanimous winner with my friends.
Many thanks to our tasters, Michele, Beth, Elizabeth, Jim and Charles. I was the 6th.
